Bringing East Coast sophistication to the West Coast's wild, Katharine Webster's inspiration comes directly from the landscape, her clients, and the rhythms of nature. An internationally recognized landscape designer with degrees in American Studies and Environmental Sculpture from Colby College and a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture from Harvard, her vision and approach have been shaped by diverse influences. These include the simplicity of island life in Ontario, an international upbringing, an apprenticeship to famed sculptor Jackie Winsor, rigorous training under master landscape architects on both coasts, and three decades in private practice. Although always guided by rigor, her work is contextual: highly thoughtful, carefully layered, and uniquely born of people, palette and place.

Katharine Webster approaches each project as an opportunity to draw clients directly into their own private oases. Her innovative approach to outdoor living is fresh and transformative; she combines a singular design sensibility with a deep understanding of plants, the landscape, and state-of-the-art materials. She is able to seamlessly meld interior and alfresco living spaces within any range of microclimates. She designs graceful solutions to environmental and logistical challenges while threading together complex yet cohesive spaces with unexpected tones and textures, often within unique spatial constraints. Whether a deck, patio, backyard, an entire estate or virgin landscape, she excels in transforming natural places into unique venues for family gatherings, entertaining, work, and play, and connecting interiors to distinct yet integrated outdoor 'rooms' that encourage flow. This results in bespoke living spaces that express her clients' dreams.

Designing unique environmental sculptures is just one way in which Kate helps clients enhance their outdoor living experience while finding connection with nature and each other in the garden. "The built environment is a laboratory of finds and discoveries of old and new, repurposed and true," she says. "I relish bringing out the essence of things, just like I do with my clients."
